Aliyah Hits 12-Year High
Despite wars and terror, the exiles continue to return to Zion! More than 30,000 immigrants arrived in Israel in 2015, a 10 percent increase over the previous year and the highest immigration (aliyah) figure since 2003.
According to a report by the Jewish Agency, a record 7,900 immigrants arrived fromFrance, a 10 percent rise from 2014. The terrorist attacks and growing anti-Semitic incidents in France have made it the biggest contributor to aliyah for two straight years.
The second-largest group came from Ukraine, prompted by the fighting with Russia. Some 7,000 Ukrainian immigrants reached Israel in 2015, up 15 percent from 2014; and 6,600 immigrants came from Russia, a spike of 40 percent over the previous year.
Immigration from North America stood at 3,768 in 2015, a slight decrease from 3,871 in 2014.
Half of the new immigrants in 2015 were under the age of 30. The largest number settled in Tel Aviv (3,620) followed by Netanya (3,500), Jerusalem (3,030) and Haifa (2,250).
“The high number of immigrants, except from Western countries, demonstrates the drawing power of the Zionist idea,” said Jewish Agency chairman Natan Sharansky. “The fact that immigrants choose to come here is because Israel gives their lives a meaning unobtainable elsewhere. This choice imposes on us the responsibility to [help them]…put down roots in Israel so that they may enrich the diversity of Israeli society.”
